OVER HEAD is visual response to the horrific bush fire season in Australia that spanned from July 2019 to February 2020. Jess’ home on the South Coast of NSW was amongst some of the many towns on the Australian East Coast heavily affected by this bushfire season. Jess has used charcoal that has washed up on the beach in her hometown Tuross Head and from the burnt bush land at Nerrigundah, NSW. The works she has created explore themes of trauma experienced by the land and the people. She explores the sense of sacredness the charcoal holds and the importance of the materials used is reflective of the particular moment in time.
